Handling Reactive Dogs in the City

Life with a dog who barks, jumps, lunges or bites can be difficult in any environment, but city life can be especially tough. Urban dog owners report feeling overwhelmed and defeated by seemingly simple tasks, such as using the elevator or crossing busy intersections.

Reactive dogs display unwanted behaviour in the presence of specific stimuli. Frequently, these are people or dogs and are very difficult to avoid when living in a city. Reactive behaviours like barking, growling, lunging or snapping can cause conflict between neighbours and create feelings of chronic stress in both humans and their dogs. There are many successful behaviour modification programs designed to address this kind of reactivity, but without the ability to keep our dogs calm and feeling safe outside of the home, these plans can often fall apart before the dog has a chance to succeed.

This webinar will outline some of the key handling and management strategies I use with my urban reactive dog clients to keep their dogs in a calm state. These strategies support our behaviour modification plans, giving city dogs a much better chance of success when we begin our training.
